Graham-Kapowsin Dual Meet - Freshmen-Sophomore Preview

Track & Field Fans,

It was a busy week for the Jaguars, as athletes competed on Thursday in a dual meet at Graham-Kapowsin and then co-hosted the First Annual South Sound Freshmen-Sophomore Preview at Sparks Stadium. The men and women combined to capture all but 5 of the 31 events contested against the Eagles, and then captured three of the four team titles at the Frosh-Soph Preview, winning the Boys’ Freshmen, Boys’ Sophomore, and Girls’ Sophomore Championships. A big thank you to everyone who made both of those meets possible – it was a great week for the Jags! The Jaguars took advantage of great weather at Graham-Kapowsin to notch many personal and season bests. The Distance Crew went 6-for-6 in the men’s and women’s 800, 1600, and 3200 and held GK to only 3 points in those events, while the Jags secured 51 points for the team total. Jessie Foster, Bryant Yabes, Tommy Wirth, and Adam Volkman led a 1-4 finish in the 800 meters, while Roz Slichko, Emily Wells, and Sophia Brown secured a sweep in the women’s 800. Slichko and Wells were joined in the women’s 1600 by Hannah Scheerer, who rounded out a sweep, while the men finished 1-9 in the men’s 1600 and the top-4 in the 3200. Scheerer doubled back from the women’s 1600 to secure a win in the 3200. Freshman Joel Nealon bettered his own freshmen school record and he was joined by other distance athletes earning personal bests: Tommy Wirth, Lucas Johnson, Levi Rohrbach, Bryant Yabes, Terrance Sylvas, Skyler Hodgdon, Jay Partridge, Joey Padilla, Adam Volkman, Will Baer, Kacy Hovde, Aubrey Taylor, Jackie Cazaras-Blas, and Lea Wilson.

The relay teams had a strong day, going 5-for-5. The women’s 4x200 meter relay team of Sydney Kuhlman, Haylie Garske, Taylor Stilli, and Hailey Savage won, and were joined in second place by the team of Jasmine Beebe, Nicole Fleetwood, Gabriela Cintron, and Jazmyne McGirt. In the 4x100, the team of Kylie Warchola, Hailey Savage, Taylor Nagler, and Carley Huber earned a victory and had company from the team of KuhlmanGarskeMcGirt, and Cintron in second place. WellsSlichkoColbern, and Brown returned from their distance duties to win the 4x400, while CintronNaglerHuber, and Warchola beat out the top GK team to finish in second. On the men’s side, the team of Justyn Forward, Yahir Gonzalez, Carl Milam, and Keyshaun White won the 4x100 and were joined on the first place podium by the 4x400 team of Skye Berbert, Nicc Cruz, Tommy Wirth, and Cantrell Thomas.

Scoring for the Jags in the sprints were freshmen Cantrell Thomas and sophomore Niccalis Cruz in 1st and 3rd place in the 100, while Thomas came back as part of a 1-2-3 finish of Asher OgdenThomas, and Yahir Gonzalez in the men’s 200. Gonzalez and Berbert combined for a 1-2 finish in the men’s 400. The most impressive times of the day came from freshmen Ogden, who finished in second place in both hurdles while establishing new freshmen school records in both events (16.17/41.89). On the women’s side, McGirt and Kuhlman went 1-2 in the 100 and Kuhlman was part of a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 as freshmen Taylor Stilli earned the win and junior Sammie McGinty finished runner up. Sydney Colbern earned her first individual win of the season in the women’s 400 and Hailey Savage made her debut in the event with a third place finish.

There were plenty of fireworks in the field events; in the women’s throws, junior Savannah Fickle became a member of the 30’ club in the women’s shot put with her heave of 30’7.5” and also came back to score in the women’s discus, while her teammate Ellie Peterson won the women’s discus. Other female throwers earning personal bests included Madison Manning, Jule Herold, and Ana Rull-Orti. The men’s throws saw plenty of personal bests as well – sophomore Gavin Allen earned a victory and personal best in the javelin, and earned a personal best to finish third in the shot put as well. Earning the throws double was junior Jonah Mains, who emerged victorious in in both the men’s discus and shot put, both season bests, while Carl Milam threw a lifetime best to finish second in the discus. Other men earning personal bests included Chase Powers, Nathaniel Dailey, Joshua Romero, and Simon Choi.

Our jumpers overcame less-than-ideal conditions to score plenty of points for the Jags. Hugo Ntanda came back from sickness and injury to secure a win in the high jump and was joined in second place by freshmen Xander Storts. Sophomores Keyshaun White and Justyn Forward went 2-3 in the men’s long jump and sophomore Colin Rice led a 1-4 finish in the men’s triple jump, joined by Rice, Ethan Cano, and Choi.

Rogers and Emerald Ridge combined to host the First Annual Freshmen-Sophomore Preview and it was a great success. You will get the condensed version of this great event, but as you will see, our team performed great – including plenty of record setting performances. (PR=Personal Record)
