In August 2009, Coach Bates's wife suffered a myocardial infarction at the age of 41. She was in great shape, preparing to run her first half-marathon. In her recovery from the event they learned that women suffer a higher mortality rate with heart attacks because the signs of a heart attack often appear different in women than in men. There is soreness in the jaw and neck rather than the left arm. Often mistaken for anxiety attacks or the flu, many women ignore the symptoms until it is tragically too late.
